Wake up, look up
Things are not as they seem
All those men in big white houses
They are living a dying dream
And those who know that to love is not to own
Will never find themselves alone
I have known a love so great
it burns and aches and it takes
all you've got not to fall completely apart
when you watch it get torn away
I have seen a hurt go so deep
it learns to hide beneath your tissue,
between your bones
and one day you will find
you're bearing a heavy load
And I was raised to believe
that a war is over when there are still
bombs in the ground
and broken bodies to be found
And I was fooled into fighting
for myself and for nobody else, nobody else
cause they said no one was gonna fight for me
But I’m starting to look around
I see a weary sea of people
trying to pull each other up from these trenches
So hold on, hold on
things are not as they seem
and you are not on your own
cause nobody enters this world alone
We build high walls but someday they're bound to fall
or be broken down
and those who know that to love is not to own
will never find themselves alone
I have listened to bluegrass and old-timey style banjo music for many years. Nora Brown has the most poetic interpretation of these styles that I have heard so far. She is the John Fahey of banjo (but also with striking vocals). brit_b
Stirring Americana set to acoustic arrangements and topped by the legendary Alice Gerrard’s lovely, world-wise voice. Bandcamp New & Notable Oct 23, 2023
Michelle Stodart’s folk music captures hope in melancholy, addressing the transformational aspects of the most challenging times. Bandcamp New & Notable Oct 3, 2023
I had the immense pleasure and privilege of catching Miriam's recent set at Jalopy in Brooklyn and immediately snagged this lovely set of tunes. The sense of natural melodicism and overall flow of this writing is highly inspiring throughout. For stylistic reference, it's occasionally evocative of Sandy Denny's work but at other times Clouds-era Joni Mitchell and so much more. All tastefully crafted in a wholly modern way which seems uniquely hers. Max Kutner
